All That You Need To Know About Different Types Of Lenses For Glasses

We all know that glasses are used for a variety of purposes today. From providing eyesight correction to being used as a digital wellbeing device, from protecting our eyes from the harmful UV rays to acting as a safety gear during sports, glasses have truly come a long way in their functional evolution.

But what is it that makes glasses multifunctional? It is to do with the different types of lenses that are available today. Read on to find out what are the different types of lenses and the functions that they perform.

Prescription Lenses

These are the most widely used lenses. As the name suggests, they carry a prescription rating and are used for the purpose of eyesight correction. The prescription rating of both the lenses may be the same or can even vary depending upon the wearer’s requirements for both the eyes.

Varifocals

Similar to prescription lenses, even varifocals are used for the purpose of eyesight correction. However, there is a significant difference here. While prescription lenses provide eyesight correction for either nearsightedness or farsightedness, a single pair of varifocal lenses provide eyesight correction for both nearsightedness and farsightedness.

Even bifocal lenses are used for simultaneous eyesight correction of nearsightedness and farsightedness, but there is a difference here too. Varifocals, being an advancement of bifocals, come with three visibility zones (near, intermediate, and far) whereas bifocals have two visibility zones (near and far).

Due to the presence of an intermediate visibility zone, varifocal lenses ensure a seamless transition while shifting the focus of eyes from something at a distance to something close up or vice-versa.

Due to the advanced nature of varifocal lenses, it is natural for their prices to be relatively higher. However, if you wish to buy varifocal lenses at reasonable prices, you need to head over the internet as you can make incredible savings there.

UV Protective Lenses

Sunglasses provide protection from the harmful UV rays of the sun and they do this by utilising UV protective lenses, which block the UV rays from reaching our eyes.

UV protective lenses that have UV400 protective coatings make 100% UV protection a possibility. So don’t forget to look out for this aspect when buying sunglasses.

These lenses also have a dark tinted appearance that impart an amazing fashionable side to sunglasses. While out in the sun, they are a much-needed accessory - both for their function and style.

Transition Lenses

If you are fed up with carrying both glasses and sunglasses as you keep switching between indoor and outdoor spaces, you need to buy transition lenses to get rid of this need.

Transition lenses are one of the coolest innovations in the eyewear space. They not only have an exceptional style element but also an amazing utility as you get the function of both glasses and sunglasses in a single pair.

The photochromic dye that the surface of transition lenses comes coated with is sensitive to the UV rays. When UV rays meet the surface of these lenses, photochromic dye gets activated to perform the function of UV protection. Along with this, the clear visual appeal of transition lenses adopt a tinted appearance like that of sunglasses.

When the surrounding is free of UV rays, transition lenses act as a normal pair of glasses with clear lenses. In sunny conditions, they automatically transform into a cool and UV-protective pair of sunglasses.

Anti-glare Lenses

Glare is a phenomenon of light that is caused due to light rays that are reflected horizontally after striking various obstacles. One of the common problems that you might experience when these reflected light rays reach your eyes is lack of clarity in vision. It is something that you will certainly want to avoid, especially during activities like driving or playing sports where glare is more common. So how do you deal with glare? The solution is anti-glare lenses.

Anti-glare lenses come loaded with anti-reflective coating that filters out the light rays responsible for causing glare and hence, helps in eliminating glare. Any pair of glasses can be customised with an anti-reflective coating.

Blue Light Blocking Lenses

In this era of rapid digitalisation, most of us have seen an increase in our screen time. Although there is always scope to cut down screen time, digital screens are something that most of us cannot completely avoid as we are dependent on them for even some of our necessary needs.

The increase in screen time is a concern because excessive exposure to blue light emitted from digital screens can cause problems such as eye strain, dry eyes, and fatigue, among others. This is where blue light blocking lenses can come to our rescue.

By using a blue light filter on the surface of their lenses, blue light lenses are very effective in blocking blue light from reaching our eyes. So when are you getting your own pair of blue light blocking glasses? When you have them, don’t forget to put them on while using digital screens.
